A detailed study of the Kandariya Mahadeva Temple in Khajuraho, India, exploring the dramatic vertical form, layered towers and densely articulated stonework of the historic Hindu temple. The composition draws attention to the rhythmic repetition of its sculptural architecture and the steep processional approach towards the entrance.
Built during the Chandela period in the 11th century, the Kandariya Mahadeva Temple is one of the largest and most elaborately decorated temples within the Khajuraho group of monuments. Its clustered towers rise towards the central shikhara, creating the distinctive mountainous silhouette explored within the drawing.
Acrylic and charcoal wash combine detailed architectural linework with loose splashes, drips and layered marks, creating a strong contrast between the precision of the temple and the atmospheric background.
