A dramatic study of Melrose Abbey in the Scottish Borders, exploring the pointed arches, Gothic entrance and monumental stone façade of the historic abbey. The tightly framed composition draws attention to the scale and verticality of the architecture, with the large traceried window forming the central focus of the drawing.
Founded in 1136, Melrose Abbey became one of Scotland's most significant medieval monastic sites. The surviving ruins are particularly recognised for their richly detailed Gothic stonework, sculptural decoration and dramatic architectural remains.
Acrylic and charcoal combine precise architectural linework with deep shadows, loose splashes and expressive drips, creating a strong contrast between the structure of the abbey and the atmospheric character of the original drawing.
Part of The Drawing Archive, a collection of architectural drawings, observational studies and works gathered from sketchbooks and design projects.
Printed on heavyweight 200 gsm premium matte paper with a smooth, non-reflective finish, selected to preserve the fine linework, deep tonal contrast and layered texture of the original artwork.
